The Edmonton Oilers may be preparing to say goodbye to one of their most respected veterans. Derek Ryan, a dependable depth forward and locker room leader, appears to be gearing up for retirement following the 2024–25 NHL season. While there has been no official announcement from the Oilers or Ryan himself, a recent social media post by his wife, Bonnie, strongly hints that the end of his professional hockey career could be near.
In a heartfelt Instagram update, Bonnie revealed that the couple is planning to sell their fully furnished home in Edmonton, with a listing date set for July 1. She added that the family intends to relocate to Spokane, Washington, full-time once the current season and school year conclude — unless, as she put it, “an amazing opportunity presents itself.” The tone of the message suggests a bittersweet farewell rather than a temporary transition, with no indication that Derek will remain in Edmonton in a non-playing role.
Ryan, now 38, has enjoyed an unconventional but admirable NHL journey. Undrafted out of college hockey in Canada, he worked his way through European leagues before making his NHL debut at age 29 with the Carolina Hurricanes. He went on to play for the Calgary Flames and ultimately the Oilers, becoming known for his responsible two-way play, faceoff skills, and veteran presence.
Though Ryan’s current contract with the Oilers runs through the end of the 2024–25 season, the announcement of the home sale—and absence of any known post-playing role within the organization—has fans bracing for a potential farewell. Some supporters are calling for a fitting sendoff, while others dream of him ending his career on the highest note: with a Stanley Cup in Edmonton.
For now, Ryan remains a part of the Oilers’ plans for the upcoming season. But the writing may be on the wall. Whether he retires after one last campaign or surprises fans with another stop in his hockey journey, Derek Ryan’s career remains a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and quiet leadership.
