Texas A&M basketball star’s impressive showing in NBA Draft Combine is ironically worrying

Bucky McMillan’s jackpot get in the portal may actually backfire against him.

It’s been two months since Buzz Williams last coached at Texas A&M. Following his depature for Maryland, Bucky McMillan has dove into the transfer portal to find some hidden gems.

One of them being Mackenzie Mgbako, the transfer from Indiana. While IU fans were calling for Woodson’s job, his tenure with his alma mater ended, prompting Mgbako to transfer to Texas A&M to be the de facto star of the new look Aggies.

Now, with an impressive showing at the NBA Draft Combine, this is unexpectedly a concern for Texas A&M fans.

Mgbako’s impressive showing may mean him staying in NBA Draft

While Mgbako has been impressing Texas A&M’s program, his outstanding performances could mean that he may stay in the draft. He’s playing in front of NBA scouts, and you better believe they’re marking his name down a lot.

In the combine, you can only showcase so much, but this is concerning to think about for Aggies everywhere watching. It’d be a home run if he stays in College Station, but this looks like a guy that has looked NBA ready from his freshman season.

Mgbako sat down with 247Sports (subscription required) and praised the coaching staff, specifically McMillan for his pace and making it to the SEC, arguably the best conference in college basketball last season. It sounds like Mgbako is leaning still toward staying to give Texas A&M one shot before declaring for the 2026 NBA Draft, where he will undoubtedly be a first-round pick.

This is obviously a personal decision for anybody to make, but Mgbako being outstanding in the combine should raise a lot of eyebrows for the Aggies. It’s not certain yet what he will do, but he’ll have until the opt-out date to decide, which will be May 28.
