Tensions have been rising between the Green Bay Packers and cornerback Jaire Alexander, as the two sides have struggled to find common ground in recent months. This ongoing disconnect has fueled growing speculation that the team may release or trade the Pro Bowl defender before the start of the 2025 NFL season.
If the Packers are unable to restructure Alexander’s contract or secure a trade partner soon, what kind of financial relief would they get by moving on from him after June 1?
Jaire Alexander Could Be Cut Post-June 1, Saving Packers Over $17 Million
When healthy, Jaire Alexander is a difference-maker in the secondary. However, in the NFL, availability is often more valuable than talent—especially for a player with a contract reflective of top-tier market value.
Alexander’s recurring injury concerns and expensive deal are key reasons why Dan Fornek, NFL analyst at PlayerProfiler, named him the top candidate for release ahead of the 2025 season.
“Fornek noted, ‘If the Packers cut Alexander after June 1, they could free up more than $17 million in cap space, though they’d still be left with $7.5 million in dead money. Ideally, they’d prefer to trade him, but given his injury history, it’s doubtful any team would offer more than a seventh-round pick.’”
While trade rumors have been swirling all offseason, no deal came to fruition during or before the NFL Draft—suggesting a lukewarm market for Alexander despite his talent.
Fornek also addressed the team’s draft-day efforts to offload Alexander, writing, “The Packers tried to move Alexander during the draft but couldn’t land a satisfactory offer. While the team’s failure to draft a high-profile defensive back initially signaled they might retain him, sources indicate Green Bay remains intent on parting ways with him—even without a clear replacement lined up.”
