Alexander Zverev has ignited controversy at the French Open by claiming Carlos Alcaraz faces no serious threats until the final. After his third-round victory on Saturday, Zverev asserted Alcaraz would easily reach the final, stating no one on his side of the draw could challenge him.
The comments sparked immediate outrage on social media. Fans accused the German star of arrogance and disrespect towards fellow competitors, questioning his credentials to make such claims given his own lack of a Grand Slam title. Many also mocked his implication that *he* would be one of Alcaraz’s key obstacles in the final.
As Alcaraz gears up for his fourth-round match against Ben Shelton, Zverev faces Tallon Griekspoor, aiming to continue his strong Roland Garros record which includes last year’s final appearance.
Alexander Zverev’s comments have stirred strong reactions from tennis fans on X (formerly Twitter), many of whom viewed his remarks as arrogant and dismissive. Some fans suggested that his statements reflect a personality that makes him hard to like, especially given his status as a three-time Grand Slam runner-up who has yet to win a major title.
“This is exactly why nobody likes Zverev,” one fan posted, accompanied by laughing emojis.
Another wrote, “Such a disrespectful comment toward his fellow players. Zverev hasn’t even won a Slam, yet he has the audacity to say this.”
A third chimed in, “Hahaha, acting like he’s a real threat to Alcaraz. It’s also disrespectful to other players like Musetti and Rune.”
Several fans also took issue with Zverev appearing to include himself among the few players capable of challenging Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s French Open.
“You’re not one of them!” one user responded.
“Like Zverev is actually a threat to Alcaraz,” another added.
“Who does he mean by ‘we’?” a fan asked sarcastically, mocking his inclusion in the elite group.
Meanwhile, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to face 13th seed Ben Shelton later on Sunday for a spot in the quarterfinals. Should he advance, he will meet the winner of the match between 12th seed Tommy Paul and 25th seed Alexei Popyrin.
