The San Antonio Spurs continue their quiet but calculated offseason strategy, addressing a key need by signing veteran center Luke Kornet to shore up their backup frontcourt. While the move may not make headlines, it reflects the Spurs’ commitment to rounding out a roster that’s finally poised to reenter playoff contention in the highly competitive Western Conference.
Kornet, a 7-foot-2 center known for his floor spacing and high-IQ team defense, gives San Antonio a reliable option behind Victor Wembanyama. With the Spurs prioritizing depth and flexibility, the addition of Kornet fits their mold—veteran-savvy, cost-effective, and team-first.
This move follows the Spurs’ selection of highly-touted prospects Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in the 2025 NBA Draft, signaling a blend of youth and experience that could lift the team into postseason relevance for the first time since the Tim Duncan era.
Yet, the Spurs might not be done.
According to league chatter, San Antonio has also emerged as a potential landing spot for nine-time All-Star and former MVP Russell Westbrook, who remains unsigned. After a late-season resurgence with the Denver Nuggets—where he provided energy, leadership, and surprising efficiency—Westbrook has drawn interest as a veteran contributor on a team-friendly deal.
While Westbrook’s prime is behind him, his value as a sparkplug off the bench and locker-room leader shouldn’t be underestimated. His fit in San Antonio, however, raises questions. With De’Aaron Fox now in the fold following the departure of Chris Paul, the backcourt is largely spoken for. Westbrook, known for his ball dominance, would likely need to accept a significantly reduced role to join Gregg Popovich’s rotation.

Eight years ago, the idea of Westbrook in silver and black alongside Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge might have broken the internet. Today, it’s more about mentorship than marquee appeal—but it’s a move that could make sense if both sides align on expectations.
