The Denver Broncos already had one of the NFL’s most fearsome defenses in 2024. Headlined by superstar cornerback and Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II, the unit was loaded with elite talent. But after the 2025 NFL Draft, things may have gotten even better — thanks to a first-round pick that some are calling a “dark horse” for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Enter Jahdae Barron.
Selected 20th overall out of the University of Texas, Barron brings versatility, speed, and swagger to an already stacked Broncos defense. While big-name prospects like Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter are dominating headlines, Barron has quietly been gaining momentum as a player who could make an immediate splash.
A Swiss Army Knife in the Secondary
Barron, who signed a projected 4-year, $18 million contract with a $9.7 million signing bonus, fits today’s NFL mold perfectly: a defensive back who can line up anywhere. Whether it’s outside corner, nickel, safety, or even dime linebacker, Barron has shown the ability to handle multiple roles. At 5-foot-11 and 194 pounds with 4.39 speed, he’s athletic enough to cover elite receivers and physical enough to support the run.
“This Is Football” host Kevin Clark recently called him his top “Instant Impact Rookie” in the 2025 class. “I’m having a hard time seeing Barron not being an instant impact star,” Clark said, noting how seamlessly he could plug into Denver’s aggressive, playmaker-rich defense.
Proven Playmaker at Texas
Barron capped his college career in dominant fashion, earning the 2024 Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. His final season included 67 tackles, 11 pass deflections, and 5 interceptions as he helped lead Texas to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Scouts praised not just his athletic traits, but also his instincts and football IQ. “His ability to play multiple positions, combined with his high football IQ, physicality, and ball skills, gives him a high ceiling in a variety of defensive schemes,” Bleacher Report’s Cory Giddings wrote pre-draft.
Perfect Fit in a Star-Studded Defense
The Broncos’ defense is not short on talent — and that’s exactly why Barron’s arrival is so intriguing. He joins a secondary led by Surtain, with Riley Moss opposite him at corner and former All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga at safety. The front seven features 2024 All-Pros Zach Allen and Nik Bonitto, both of whom help generate the kind of pressure that can turn a ballhawk like Barron loose.
Barron doesn’t need to carry the defense — he just needs to do his job. And in a defense full of stars, that might be all it takes to stand out.
Long Odds, High Upside
As of May 1, Barron’s Defensive Rookie of the Year odds sit at +2200 — far behind front-runners like Abdul Carter (+250) and Travis Hunter (+750). But with a role carved out in a top-tier defense and an elite college résumé, Barron could easily outperform expectations.
Broncos fans will get their first look at him during rookie minicamp from May 9–11. If early signs are any indication, Jahdae Barron might not be a dark horse for long.
