The University of Alabama volleyball team announced a new addition to its coaching staff on Thursday, hiring Ray Lewis as an assistant coach under head coach Rashinda Reed. (And no — not the NFL legend.)
“From my first conversation with Coach Reed, I knew Alabama was a special place,” Lewis said in a university press release. “I’m truly thankful to the coaching staff and administration for this opportunity to join such a respected program. Alabama sets the bar in athletics, and I’m excited to help our student-athletes thrive on and off the court.”
Lewis brings a strong coaching background, most recently serving three years as Director of Volleyball for Merrimack College’s men’s team. Prior to that, he spent three seasons as head coach at Benedictine University, compiling a 62-20 record and leading the team to the 2019 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship. That season, he was named NAIA Coach of the Year.
His resume also includes experience coaching at the high school and club levels, and he competed as a collegiate player at Lakeland College.
