The interim manager for Tykes outlines his “plan” to defeat Cobblers and guarantee Barnsley’s spot in the League One playoffs.

The interim manager of Barnsley, Martin Devaney, has promised to “let the shackles off” and play “attacking football” when his team plays Northampton at Oakwell on Saturday in the crucial season finale.

After Neill Collins, the manager, decided to break ways with him, Devaney will take over this weekend. Only two of the Tykes’ previous 11 games have ended in victories, so a victory on Saturday will guarantee a spot in the play-offs.
“I’m thrilled,” Devaney said. “There was no hesitancy when I was asked last week. Everyone is excited about the game, and I have been encouraging the guys to be particularly optimistic all week. It’s wonderful because we have control over it and it’s what we want. It is up to us as a group and club. I’m sure the fans will make today unforgettable

It’s a matter of maintaining organization while removing the boys’ restraints so they can have fun, express themselves, and play attacking football. Although we are aware that Northampton will be well-organized and may pose a threat in some situations, we will be ready for that.

“Things will differ. My strategy is to play a bit more direct, more crosses, and a greater forward pressure in their half. I am aware of the expectations of the club and what has made us so successful. We’ll be counter- and high-pressing without the ball.

“I’m not thinking about playing other games. I’m not concerned about it. Our goal is to succeed. I’ve instructed the players to be authentic. They are four games from promotion and three games from Wembley.
