The quarterback position for the Atlanta Falcons is dubious at best. Even if they have Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder, neither player has truly demonstrated during their careers that they are capable of taking a club all the way to the postseason or beyond.
Having said that, the Falcons may think about signing Kirk Cousins in free agency in an effort to maximize the other assets they have available.
The best thing the Falcons can do this summer is sign Cousins, as the reporter Aaron Schatz of ESPN recently highlighted in a column on the one player that every NFL club should sign in free agency.
In comparison to Heinicke and Ridder, Cousins is a much superior choice as he is an experienced veteran. The Vikings also desperately need a quarterback who can consistently produce at a high level, especially with the arsenal of weapons they already have on the field.
“With Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder at quarterback, the Falcons cannot continue.” They’re losing out on a talented bunch of players that includes Kyle Pitts, TE, Bijan Robinson, and wide out Drake London. Thus, what if you took a veteran and paired him with a young player who seems to be the heir apparent from the middle rounds of the draft? In 2023, Cousins’ half-season QBR of 63.2 was his highest since 2016. Playing for Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, a former Sean McVay protégé, he had success.
Here, he might perform under Zac Robinson, the offensive coordinator and another protégé of McVay.
As it turns out, though, the Falcons will not be getting Cousins for free. According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the 35-year-old signal-caller could earn as much as $51 million a season. Cousins is projected to sign a three-year, $118 million contract, with a market value of $39.3 million on Spotrac.
For what it’s worth, Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons have been connected before. There is a widespread perception in the media that Cousins is a better match for the team, even if other quarterbacks like Justin Fields have also been discussed as possible targets.
Even Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, who shared some similar views with Schatz, recently stated that Cousins is helping the Falcons.
First of all, they already have a really strong roster. Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeir, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts are among their well-equipped weaponry. You consider what he might accomplish if they added Cousins, and they have a strong offensive line. And he throws certain kind of throws that are really, really well, right? He is quite precise. He’s quite skilled at playing action, according to Schultz.
Although it’s unclear if the Falcons would pursue Cousins, given his popularity, they could want to give it some thought or investigate it.
