Even if a Premier League team made a deal, Hull City owner Acun Ilicali believes the Tigers would not entertain selling star winger Jaden Philogene for £30 million (£25.6 million) euros this summer.
After moving from Aston Villa for £5 million in the summer, Philogene has drawn attention from both City and the England Under-21 team this season. Along with colleague Jacob Greaves, he has been linked to transfers away from the MKM Stadium this summer in the event that Liam Rosenior’s club does not receive promotion.
Although it only applies when both teams are in the same level, the winger’s former club, Villa, did include a buy-back clause in the deal that saw the 21-year-old go from the Midlands to East Yorkshire for a sum of £15 million.
Out of politeness, City would return to the Villa Park club and give them first refusal if another club made a better offer. The City owner adds that the strategy of purchasing for cheap prices and selling for large profits is the way to go, but Ilicali thinks the Tigers would not be eager to sell for a little over £25 million, which would be a significant return on a player they spent only £5 million for.
“At this point, I think the squad is successful. We purchased it while it was rated 21st. Naturally, we haven’t reached the level of success we had hoped for, but running a business is similar to ascending a ladder,” he stated in an interview with the Turkish publication Sabah.
In my own career, it has been similar. I want to go step by step up the stairs on our tour across England. I am unable to set a deadline since I will not be satisfied with either speed. I want us to go up gradually.
“Thank God, we are transferring from 1 to 3 and 3 to 5. It will cost you €5 million and be thirty. It will cost 50 when you purchase it for 10. We must succeed in this. Our policy will be as follows.
Similar to how Real Madrid acquired Arda Güler. We can estimate how much more he will be going forward. We must capture players who are like that. Now worth €30 million, we paid €5 million for Jaden Philogene. However, we don’t plan to part with him for thirty.
“Ozan’s age (29), makes him an unfit player. Turkey made three proposals to us. But England had made no offer. We used to play Football Manager (FM) a lot back in the day. You see, I am now living out the truth of this, but it is not an easy fact to face.
If the club did decide to end its wait for Premier League football, the exuberant Tigers manager also identified two players he would like to sign: Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and former Manchester United midfielder Fred.
“I would close my eyes and buy Fred at the end of the season if I had the right to buy two football players,” he continued. “You could sit and enjoy watching the Seri, Fred, and Ozan trio perform.” Also, I would purchase Muslera. Welcome to the Premier League, Muslera.”
